Michelangelo Pistoletto who was part of the Arte Povera movement and commonly uses everyday materials in his works. I was initially draw to his work after discovering his work with mirrors, it had been previously recommended that I look at his work for this reason.
Michelangelo Pistoletto at Blenheim Palace is an exhibition spanning throughout the house and grounds of this grand old house. One of the works is a pile of rags separated by a mirror creating a divide between the coloured and white rags. This brings to mind questions of rich/poor or black/white ethnicity. The rich/poor divide is especially highlighted in the space of a Palace and its grandure. It was interesting to over hear the public’s views on the exhibition as many including an American tourist who were widely critical of the work who were there to view the undisrupted space possibly to see some Christmas decorations but instead are confronted with rags, upturned furniture and very large text pieces questioning the idea of God. Even the impressive dining room table of a grand dining room was replaced with Pistoletto’s work.
